Central Oklahoma. One of a very few bridges from the Route 66 era still in use, though not the first bridge at this site. Notice how the road significantly narrows as the bridge arrives. This bridge is impassable by any two trucks traveling in opposite directions. Remember, the cars of Route 66's original era were much thinner than today's cars.
Cherokee County, Kansas. An original bridge from the original Route 66. The bridge has been in a constant state of use since Route 66 traversed Kansas. Kansas 66 now uses a much more modern bridge about 50 yards away. However, Historic Route 66 exits from Kansas 66 Southbound and crosses the original bridge. Due to the larger cars of modern times, the historic bridge is a one-way only southbound crossing.
Winslow, Arizona. "Standing On The Corner In Winslow, Arizona" (c) The Eagles.
Central Illinois. During the existence of Route 66, it was re-routed three known times. Each re-routing was to reach different towns. This presented one minor problem; the towns on the old routes were essentially left stranded. In Illinois, there were only two versions of Route 66. The Illinois Historic 66 road signs allow the traveler to choose which of the two routes to follow.
Victorville, California. Once a small community well outside the urban sprawl of Los Angeles, this town has now grown into a city of its own. Some of the features of Victorville include the San Bernadino County Fair, 18 hole municipal golf course, and a 36 hole miniature golf course just down the street from this sign. Notice the "Get Your Kicks on Route 66" sign in the lower left corner.
Golden Shores, Arizona. "Welcome to Golden Shores, The Gateway to Historic Route 66." Golden Shores, located just across the California/Arizona border, is small town with a big heart for Route 66 and its nostalgia.
